Yes, I ate my placenta and twice at that. No, my husband didn’t grill it up and no, I don’t believe in cannibalism. So there I said it…don’t judge me!
After having a milk supply issue with my first daughter, Lilly, I decided I wanted to try placenta encapsulation with my second daughter. I did a lot of research and I made the decision this was going to be beneficial for me and my new baby, Sunnie.
I found that while there was ‘no scientific evidence’ to prove any results, there were claims that eating your placenta after birth could:
- Increase milk supply
- Balance hormones
- Ward off postpartum depression
- Replenish depleted iron
- Increase energy level (ummm…yes, please!)
- Assist uterus to return to pre-pregnancy state
- Reduce post-natal bleeding
- Speed up recovery time
- Prevent signs of aging (Whoop Whoop!)
What did I have to lose, right?
Back in 2014, I found Placenta Works! They are a professional encapsulation service for our area. I used them in 2014 and again two months ago on my new baby, Easton. I felt I needed to utilize this service again because I now would have 3 kids!
Placenta Works has three specialists in the area and I this is why I picked Placenta Works.
~ Training: They have completed training from PBi which is the original, largest and most recognized placenta encapsulation organization in the world. Also, these specialists have completed Blood Borne Pathogen and Food Handling/Food Safety courses.
~Preparation: You are able to choose if you would like your placenta encapsulation to be conducted in the lab of Placenta Works or in your own home. I chose my own home.
~Package: They are the total package! Not only do you receive your encapsulated placenta but you also get a Placenta “Tree of Life” print, Tincture, Smoothie, Salve, Mother’s Broth and the Umbilical Cord Keepsake for only $275.00
The process was extremely simple. Before delivering my baby I notified the hospital to keep my placenta and not to put ANYTHING on it. They placed it into a plastic tub and my husband took it home for me. But, check with your hospital regarding their policy.
My husband met the specialist at our home and she got started. She brought everything she needed, cleaned up before and after, and educated my husband at the same time.
Stephanie Mahoney was our recent specialists at Placenta Works. I can’t say enough good things about Stephanie! She has been doing placenta encapsulation for almost 3 years and has encapsulated over 125 placentas.
Let’s talk about what you receive in their service!
// Package //
~Placenta “Tree of Life” Print: You actually get TWO prints! One print is of the maternal side of the placenta and the other print is of the fetal side. Natural coloring is used, NOT dye or food coloring. The finished product is stunning. I actually framed mine and it’s hanging in the baby room. I love when people ask me about the “tree” because it’s not what they think it is:)
~Smoothie: This is a placenta fruit smoothie which has to be prepared within 24-36 hours after birth. Yes…this is the raw piece of placenta put into a fruit smoothie. It is more potent but gives you that boost of energy you really need.
~Mothers Broth: This was one of my favorite things in the package. The Mothers Broth is a natural by-product of gently steaming the placenta. It also includes traditional Chinese warming herbs, myrrh and ginger. I mixed this broth with tea and local honey. Believe it or not it actually tasted good. I went and took a nap after drinking the broth and when I woke I was fully engorged with breast milk so, I swear by this broth.
~Umbilical Cord Keepsake: The umbilical cord is gently washed and dehydrated. It is stored in a satin keepsake bag. This reminds me of the everlasting symbol of the physical connection I had with my babies.
~Salve: This comes in an amber glass jar of herbal placenta salve and infused with your placenta powder. This salve is magic! It’s great as a nipple cream or for eczema, stretch marks, boo-boos & my personal favorite, diaper rash cream.
~Tincture: This tincture is processed from a raw piece of placenta and takes about 6 weeks to complete. Don’t worry you won’t forget because your specialist will send you an email reminding you what to do. I personally didn’t try this tincture in 2014 and I’m not sure why. However, I am really excited about using it this time and I just received my email because it has been 6 weeks. I’m excited to try this because I can use it for teething on my little one and for any hormonal imbalance I might start to feel plus, it’s great for when I run out of placenta capsules.
~Placenta Encapsulation: I chose the TCM Method. This involves lightly steaming the placenta with herbs prior to dehydration. The placenta is not cooked in the oven (so if you are thinking of a DIY of placenta encapsulation you might want to leave it to the professionals). I was able to get 159 capsules out of my placenta…woohoo! I am not by any means a hoarder but, I really do hoard these capsules. I feel like I have had 3 cups of coffee after taking the capsules (bye, Dunkin Donuts).
So go do your own research and do what is best for you. Don’t listen to those haters. Be sure to check out the frequently asked questions at www.placentaworks.com to help you. It is full of important information!
Side note: I don’t really care if you judge me….it was totally worth it!
